Wieliczka Salt Mine is located about 12 km from the centre
of Krakow. That is the oldest Salt Mine in Europe still functioning since the
medieval times. In 1978 it was entered on the UNESCO's first World Cultural and
Natural Heritage List. Tourists visiting the mine walk down 360 steps into the
salt mine, The tourist route is a system of mine excavations from 64 to 135 meters
below ground level. The groups of tourists follow the 2-km route passing the
chambers, corridors, chapels and underground lakes. Duration of the walking tour
in the mine estimates about 2,5 hours.
